Samsung Galaxy Nexus versus Samsung Galaxy SII media options

The fad for larger screens in competing devices has continued throughout the year, with reviewers and consumers double-checking just how big the screen and display is for every new launch. So for the new Galaxy Nexus deals, they have big shoes to fill. Samsung, in fact is responsible for most of the largest smartphone screen sizes. The Epic 4G Touch is 4.52”, SII Skyrocket is 4.5”, Infuse 4G also 4.5” and Droid Charge 4.3”. The Nexus comes in at 4.65”.

Super AMOLED screens represented a jump forward in touchscreen technology. The screens are brighter, reflect less sunlight and also use less power. The Galaxy SII boasts a Super AMOLED Plus screen which brings an even greater resolution and sharper pixel density. That means details are much finer and better for zooming in, ideal for viewing pictures and media.  The SII comes with 800 x 480 pixel resolution and the 4.3” screen is 218 ppi.

By comparison the Galaxy Nexus’ screen does represent a shift forward. Its HD Super AMOLED features a 720 HD resolution, 1280 x 720 pixels. The Galaxy Nexus is the first device to use the screen. Samsung says they achieved the higher resolution because they moved to a laser method to print and produce the screen. The screen is much bigger as well, possibly capitalising on the eye-catching characteristic of its predecessor. At 4.65” it will be one of the largest smartphone screens in the market, with some wondering whether it will be practical enough to even fit in pockets.

One of the major tools that will be using that huge screen on a day to day basis is the camera. The SII comes with an 8 megapixel camera with auto focus and full HD 1080p video recording. It captures 30 fps and uses a single LED flash. On the front, for video calling, recording and snapping stills and the like the SII boasts a 2 megapixel camera. In comparison, some might be disappointed that the Nexus carries a five megapixel camera. Some claim this is a step backwards for Samsung, despite the fact that that camera delivers images at 2592 x 1936 pixels comes with auto focus, zero shutter lag and a dual LED flash. It is also capable of 1080p video recording at 1920 x 1080 at 30fps. Its front camera is 1.3 megapixels.

It may have a reduced camera resolution but whether anyone will really notice the difference on the super-sized Nexus screen remains to be seen. Ice Cream Sandwich provides a host of new camera features that will not be available on the SII for a good few months yet, by which time we will probably be greeted by phone deals for the next installment of Android.

Utilising the Android 4.0 software and the desire to improve connectivity and sharing media from device to device means the Nexus will be well placed to snap video and then display it on a TV or computer. The Nexus screen and display and the fact that it shows a move forward from the SII illustrates that Samsung understand that their market place likes a big screen and an interactive display; it could strengthen its grip on dominating the mobile media market.
